Key Ingredients
Step by Step Instructions
- In a small bowl or glass jug mix the cornstarch and water and set aside.
- In a medium-sized pan on a low-medium heat add the oil, then the minced garlic and grated ginger. Saute for 1-2 minutes until golden. Then add the rest of the sauce ingredients. Stir.
- Bring the heat up to medium-high. Then add the cornstarch mixed with water, stir until it is dissolved through the sauce, bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and cook for 1-2 minutes until thickened. Remove from the heat and set aside while you make the tofu.
- In a small bowl add the cornstarch, oil, and tamari mix together until you have a semi-fine crumb. There may be some lumps, this is fine.
- Drain the tofu and place it between two paper towels to absorb as much moisture as possible. Cut into cubes.
- Place the tofu into the bowl and coat as evenly as you can with the "crumb".
- Heat some oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Add the coated tofu and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and slightly crispy.
- Add the sticky sweet and sour sauce and coat the tofu, cook for 1-2 minutes.
- Serve over rice or cauliflower rice. Pour over any extra sauce. Top with sesame seeds, chopped spring onion, chili, and lime wedges if desired.
Additional Recipe Notes
- Rice vinegar works best but if you don't have any then you can use any vinegar.
- I like ginger so I have grated big pieces of ginger which you can see in the sticky sauce. I have used ½ tablespoon of ginger.
- If you don't like the taste of ginger then use less approx around 1 teaspoon.
- I have kept chili out of the sauce to keep this recipe child friendly. I like to add chili flakes on at the end. You can add them to the sauce if you would like the sauce to be a bit spicier.
- Taste the sauce, if you would like it to be sweeter then add some more maple syrup or a splash of tomato sauce.
This sticky tofu recipe is delicious on its own over rice but also goes well with a side of sauteed or steamed greens such as bok choy, Chinese cabbage, broccoli, or beans.
